2009 Christmas Party
Pictures coming soon!
On 5th December 2009 at the Courtyard Cafe & Bar Dorking Kickboxkarate held our end of year Christmas Party. We started the night off with the end of year club awards (winners listed below). Lisa Boardman then kicked off some party games for the kids this included musical sparing and decorating adults as Christmas trees. After the kids had got over excited with putting make up on the adults we then moved on to some adult games. The first adult game was a team relay race the object of the game was to spin around a broom stick 10 times then run and tag the next person in your team. The majority of participants ended up on the floor in which the kids found this extremely entertaining. The last game “The Cream Cracker Challenge” was only for the advanced adult grades. The idea was for each team to finish cream crackers as fast as they can. This ended up a very hardcore game and was a challenge only the strong should undertake. After the games had finished everyone moved out onto the dance floor and pulled out some moves to finish off a great night. Thank you to all who came along and supported the night, bring on 2010!

Super Seminar
On the 24th October 2009 we held a Super Seminar of mixed Martial Arts. Coldharbour Aikido club and Kickboxkarate performed a joint training session. We started with 1 hour and 30 mins of Kickboxing/Karate instructed by Sean McCarthy. We then moved on to 1 hour and 30 mins of Aikido instructed by Piers Cooke. The Super Seminar really brought out both the differences and similarities between the two Martial Arts. Each person from Coldhabour Aikido club and Kickboxkarate were able to take what knowledge they gained from the Super Seminar and put it into practice when they return back to training.
Kickboxkarate would like to say a big thank you to Piers Cooke for making the day possible. Well done to all who attended the Super Seminar. After the success of this first Super Seminar we hope to arrange another seminar in the future.

This month (August 2009) KickboxKarate has launched a special offer aimed at children on their summer holidays. To stop them nagging mum or spending the whole six weeks playing on their X-boxes, the club is offering all new youngsters the chance to train at the club for free in August. At KickboxKarate we try and encourage all our students to live a healthy lifestyle, which means eating well and exercising often. We want to do our bit to tackle childhood obesity.
Kickboxing is a great way of releasing energy - something all youngsters have in abundance. It also teaches them discipline, self control and helps focus their minds, while having fun at the same time. KickboxKarate was the brainchild of 22-year-old Sean McCarthy who has been practicing karate since the age of seven. He set up the first club based in Dorking around two years ago, and, together with training partner, Lisa Boardman, the pair launched the Reigate class last summer, where they are both instructors. Lisa Boardman started training at the age of 16 and has competed for her country four times, winning two bronze medals and a silver medal in 2007. Both instructors are second dan black belts and have been teaching for many years.
The Reigate classes are held every Wednesday, at The Rank Hall, Reigate Methodist Church, High Street, between 6pm and 7pm for children aged five -14,and between 7pm and 8pm for adults and older children. Sean also runs classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at The Ashcombe School, Dorking, and Saturday at Dorking Leisure Centre. As well as training, which includes pad drills, fitness, traditional karate katas (set defence moves) and sparring, KickboxKarate is also involved in the many competitions taking place in the UK and abroad. In just a short amount of time, KickboxKarate students have achieved a wealth of trophies from the numerous competitions.
Sean, a member of the Great Britain World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO) squad for six years, is gearing up to compete in Belgium in September. He and Lisa, who has also been a member of the same GB squad for five years, will also attend the Italian Open in October. Local Kickboxing Karate Club Run for Charity
A local kickboxing karate club held a sponsored run on 4th July to which they donated all the funds raised from the day to The Rainbow Trust children’s hospice based in leatherhead. The Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity provides vital practical and emotional support to families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.
Sean McCarthy instructor of Kickboxkarate based in Dorking and Reigate said: It was a great day both kids and adults took part in the run to raise money for the local charity. It is great that students, parents and friends from Kickboxkarate are so willing to get involved in raising money for the community.
Abigail Deeley, Press Officer at Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity commented: “We are delighted to benefit from the kickboxing charity day. The event will hopefully generate awareness of Rainbow Trust in the local community and will help to raise vital funds for families who have a very sick child. Thank you to everybody for your support!”

Lisa and Sean complete 2nd Dan Black belt Grading
Reported by Sean McCarthyI woke up on Sunday morning with a big bowl of bran flakes on top of a tray and a spoon in my right hand pretty much my normal routine. The only difference was today was not my normal routine I had a full kickboxing syllabus in left hand I was going for my 2nd Dan Black belt in kickboxing. Later I would be doing 6 hours of grading. I found myself chomping away on bran flakes doing kicks and punches in the living room!
I arrived at Crawley K2 Leisure Centre willing and ready to undertake my grading. I think what people forget is that the last grading I completed was 4th June 2003 for my Black Belt 1st Dan. So it has been 6 years since I last did a grading. When you go for your 2nd Dan there is no syllabus for the day you must know every movement inside out that includes fitness, bag work and self defence.
Lisa Boardman was also doing her 2nd Dan in Traditional Karate. So I had a close friend and fellow instructor to share the experience with. We both gave 110% commitment over the course of the 6 hours. It paid off we received the results for our 2nd Dan Black belts on 22nd June 2009. I and Lisa would like to say a big thank you to all who have helped us on our journey over the years.

Team Spirit Squad Training 14th June 2009
Bromley was the venue of the Team Spirit Squad training. It was a slow start to the day as there was a big cue of traffic leading up to the venue due to a car show nearby.
