Fun Run & Squad Training

Fun & run are not two words people normally associate together. For most a run is more like torture but for kickboxkarate and SKF students on Sunday 19th September the sponsor run had greater meaning for a good cause too raise funds for the fighting team spirit and everyone’s own fitness development.

With ideal running conditions on a sunny but not too hot autumn day, instructors, students, parents, friends and family of all ages stood at the start line ready to face the challenge. For some they pushed their pain barrier with lots of sprint finishes encouraged by a supportive crowd and for others this was their first serious exercise for some time so was feeling the ache afterwards. Everyone put in a great effort finishing the course then everyone had a great time afterwards "chilling" (some literally!) by the pool and the social activities went into the night camping out enjoying food on the camp fire.

With true fighting spirit and being woken up "too" early on the Sunday (thanks kids!) everyone headed over to the Dorking sports centre for the team spirit squad training the following morning after the sponsored run. The training session had a range of abilities from beginners to seasoned international fighters but everyone worked extremely hard pushing themselves and preparing for the events coming up in the near future.

Many thanks to the Harris family for hosting the event and making everyone feel so welcome, anyone with sponsorship money, questions, ideas or interest in team spirit and what it's all about can contact the team coach Sean McCarthy on;

Kickboxkarate Ready 2 Rumble Fight Night

Well done to all who took part in the fight night on the 28th august 2010. You all fought extremely well and produced some great action.

Chloe took the Kids Best fighter and Moe took the adults best fighter. As this event was a great success I look forward to doing some more in the future.

Training Day
On the Sunday 5th September 2010 Kickboxkarate students gathered for a 3 hour training session. This session for most of the kids marked the end of the school holidays. In the session we covered all the variations of training from beginner movement’s right up to advanced. I hope that all who took part enjoyed the day.

Parents and Kids night & Bring a friend Night
Kickboxkarate held two separate nights where students are allowed to bring someone into the club who does not train. On Tuesday 27th July we held a parents and kids night this was to allow the parents a chance to learn the moves under the instruction of their child. It was a good chance for the parents to bond with their kids. On Thursday 29th July we held bring a friend night. This was a great opportunity for students to show case the skills they had learnt in front of their friends.

SKF Wilderness Camping

On the 24th July 8 members from Kickboxkarate went camping along with other members of SKF. It was a great night we had some fun building fires and having a few beers together.

A late night for one individual who fell asleep by the fire only to wake up to a tower of Pringles on his head. Thank you to all who came along.

The Weald School and Brockham Fair

Kickboxkarate performed a demo at both The Weald School on the 10th July and Brockham fair on the 17th July. Thank you to all who came along to support the day. A big thank you goes out to the Harris family for their support they provide on the demo’s we have done so far this year.

It was a hot one for all who came some were grading so they had to push themselves in the heat. The day also crossed over with England vs. Germany football so those who attended were a very committed bunch. Well done to all who took part in the day.

Kickboxkarate Demo

Thank you to all that came along to the session at Beare Green Summer Fair and Brockham School Fair. Kickboxkarate kids, adults, friends, family and even some old members came along to the day.

On both events we set up a gazebo with banners we also put up a table with recent newspaper articles and trophies displaying the recent achievements the club had made.

At Beare Green fair students performed two demos at the fair and generated allot of interest in the clubs. It was a hot and sunny day some of the students enjoyed it so much they stayed all day 12.00 pm to 5.00 pm and made the most of the nice weather.

The following week we went to Brockham School fair we have been doing a demo here for now the third year in a row. A sunny but windy day provided a test for us to put up the gazebo but we got there in the end. The students once again displayed their talents providing an excellent demo to the crowd.

After both demos were complete the younger kickboxkarate students went off on the fair rides completing a fun day out for the club and an excellent two weekends.

Sean would like to say thank you to Kickboxkarate students, friends and family who came to support the day and to Beare Green fair and Brockham School fair for inviting us to the events. Thank you also goes out to the Harris family and Lorraine McCarthy for your continued support.

Super Seminar

On the 3rd April 2010 we held a Super Seminar of mixed Martial Arts. Coldharbour Aikido club and Kickboxkarate performed a joint training session. We started with 1 hour and 30 mins of Kickboxing / Karate instructed by Sean McCarthy. We then moved on to 1 hour and 30 mins of Aikido instructed by Piers Cooke.

The Super Seminar really brought out both the differences and similarities between the two Martial Arts. Each person from Coldhabour Aikido club and Kickboxkarate were able to take what knowledge they gained from the Super Seminar and put it into practice when they return back to training.
Kickboxkarate would like to say a big thank you to Piers Cooke for making the day possible. Well done to all who attended the Super Seminar.

Dorking Advertiser and Surrey Mirror Report 18th February

THREE competitions in two weeks has secured a haul of trophies for the Dorking and Redhill based KickboxKarate club. The club, run by GB squad members Lisa Boardman and Sean McCarthy, has collected a bevy of trophies from two national and one international kickboxing tournaments. While instructors Boardman and McCarthy battled against the best in Europe at the Athens Challenge in Greece along with novice fighter Kelly Thaxter, their up and coming squad of young fighters took on the nation’s finest at the Cimac Superleague event in Windsor – on the same weekend.

On February 6 and 7 in Athens, Thaxter secured first place in the light contact and silver place in the point fighting novice sections. Meanwhile Boardman came home with a bronze medal in the team event section. Despite some great fighting, McCarthy just missed out on the medals on this occasion.
While on this side of Europe, eight fighters were competing at the highly contested Superleague event in Windsor.

Christian Hamilton won his division, younger brother Joshua Hamilton, along with Dylan Knight and Jacob Scott made it into the finals taking second place. George Harris and Tom Mountley secured third place while James Harris received fourth place. Lewis James narrowly lost to the winner of his category in the first round.

Just the week before in Watford, at the Watford Open Nations, KickboxKarate fighters stormed their sections. McCarthy won his -63kg division, Kelly Thaxter secured silver in her first light contact outing in the novice section, while young Christian Hamilton scooped gold in his section. James Harris and Joshua Hamilton fought extremely well but were unable to get placed.  Dorking based World champion McCarthy, who runs sessions in Beare Green, Dorking Sports Centre and The Ashcombe School, said: “It’s fantastic to know that while we’re doing the business in Greece, our squad of talented fighters are doing the business over here.“We’ve had some fantastic results so far this year, which sets us up nicely for a positive 2010.” Horley-based Boardman, who runs the Redhill class in The Warwick School, added: “It’s great to see our younger members improving at each event. “A special mention should go to Kelly Thaxter who is competing in the much tougher light contact section and is showing a real talent for it.”
